Cool, cloudy, drizzly weather made for several fine whisky events during the past week. I had the privilege of hosting the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s San Diego Members Night event at the beautiful Prado Restaurant in Balboa Park’s House of Hospitality Building.
Our sit down dinner was in an upstairs dining room overlooking a beautifully landscaped courtyard on one side, and the SD Museum of Fine Art on the other. About 40 guests paired five Society single malts, from each of Scotland’s distilling regions, with salad, entrée, and dessert with great pleasure and delight.
Rain actually enhanced the 18th Annual Single Malt & Scotch Whisky Extravaganza at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel – lots of comments like “It’s great whisky drinking
weather” were heard! Over three dozen distilleries and brands offered over 200 expressions of their wares. On hand were Brand Ambassadors to explain the ins and outs of what makes their product unique. Highlights included one of Glenmorangie’s newest expressions, Finealta, with its distinctive caramelized oranges and peaches soaked in liqueur aroma, and Glenfiddich’s striking cocktail, served from a smoking, witch’s-like bubbling cauldron.
Next up: my own 18th Annual Christmas Tasting in San Diego next month. I hope the rain keeps up!
